Prac Three: Alonso quickest, Rosberg crashes

Fernando Alonso set the pace in Saturday's final practice in Monaco, a session that was interrupted by two red flags.

The first belonged to Nico Rosberg when, seven minutes in the session, the German suffered a huge shunt as he exited the tunnel.

Rosberg hit the barriers on the right at the exit before bouncing across the chicane, narrowly missing the division barrier and smashing into the barrier between the track and the harbour.

The second red flag was caused by Tonio Liuzzi. With six minutes remaining in the session, the backend of his Hispania snapped out and he hit the barriers with the rear left of the car causing severe damage.

The interruptions, though, didn't seem to bother Alonso, who clocked a 1:14.433 to lead the way ahead of Jenson Button and Felipe Massa.

Report: The sun was out as final practice for the Monaco GP got underway on Saturday morning. Kamui Kobayashi led the field out for their installation laps while Michael Schumacher posted the sessions first time, a 1:22.441. Fernando Alonso headed out with his Ferrari covered in green flow-paint as the Scuderia tested new parts.

Schumacher continued lapping, lowering the benchmark to a 1:19.962. However, his team-mate Nico Rosberg's session came to an early end when he lost control out of the tunnel, bounced over the chicane and had a massive shunt into the barriers. The session was red flagged due to the huge amount of debris left on the track. Merc now face a race against time as Rosberg's car is damaged on all sides.

The session was restarted 14 minutes later with Nick Heidfeld and Vitaly Petrov the first out. Schumacher dropped his time to a 1:18.566 with Sergio Perez taking second place before losing out to Sebastien Buemi. However, they all dropped moments later as Fernando Alonso went quickest with a 1:18.150.

At the halfway stage it was Alonso ahead of Jenson Button, Buemi, Felipe Massa, Perez, Kobayashi, Petrov and Mark Webber. four drivers, Pastor Maldonado, Rubens Barrichello, Lewis Hamilton and Rosberg had not set times.

Schumacher climbed to second place, two-tenths off Alons's P1 time, while Massa improved to third and Sebastian Vettel to fifth ahead of Hamilton. Vettel was the next in the P1 slot with a 1:15.423. Hamilton took second and Webber third.

Problems for Jaime Alguersuari who limped back to the pits after tapping the barriers. A punctured rear right for the Toro Rosso driver. Petrov had a moment and almost hit the barriers, just, only just, managing to take avoiding action.

Alonso took over from Vettel at the front, a 1:14.433 for the Ferrari driver. Button improved to second and Massa third. Two laps later, Massa had to take to the escape road after failing to make the corner at Ste. Devote.

With six minutes left on the clock, the session was red flagged was Tonio Liuzzi shunted heavily. The Hispania driver lost it on the bumps, the car snapped and he hit the barriers hard with the back left of the car.

The session restarted with two minutes left on the clock and ended with Alonso in the P1 slot with a 1:14.433. Button was second with Massa third.
