Prac One: Hamilton leads the way

Lewis Hamilton set the pace in a rather sedate first practice in Hungary, edging the Red Bull of Sebastian Vettel.

The McLaren driver, who is determined to prove that his victory in Germany last Sunday was not a fluke, posted a 1:23.350 around the Hungaroring.

And that was good enough to secure the P1 slot by 0.214s over Championship leader Vettel.

Fernando Alonso, whose session began with a small fire, finished in third place, a further 0.078s back and 0.024s ahead of Mark Webber.

The Aussie was the one driver to crash in Practice One as he hit the barriers at Turn 9 nose first and limped back to the pits with a damaged car.

Jenson Button, Felipe Massa, Nico Rosberg and Michael Schumacher completed the top eight ahead of Sergio Perez and Vitaly Petrov.

Report: Plently of clouds but no rain at the start of Friday's first practice for the Hungarian GP, however, there could be showers 30 minutes into the session. A few mentions, Jarno Trulli is back after missing Germany, Bruno Senna is in for Nick Heidfeld this session and Jenson Button is celebrating his 200th grand prix start. Problems for birthday boy Fernando Alonso, who suffered a small fire during his cruise mode aero run.

Nico Hulkenberg was the first to set a time, crossing the line with a 1:29.671. Sebastien Buemi took over from the Force India test driver at the top before he was overhauled by Button, who clocked a 1:25.697. Lewis Hamilton took fourth place as more drivers ventured out.

Hamilton hit the front, 0.699s up on his team-mate while Felipe Massa went third behind the two McLarens. Alonso, back on track after his mini-fire, took over from Hamilton with a 1:24.179. Alonso lowered the benchmark time as Massa took second place. Nico Rosberg went fifth quickest behind the McLarens. Mark Webber split the two Ferraris, 0.024s slower than Alonso. Sebastian Vettel joined the action, slotting into third place, with Michael Schumacher taking P7. Senna locked up into Turn 2 and had to take to the gravel. He was, however, able to continue.

Vettel took over at the front with a 1:23.564, just 0.078s up on Alonso's bet. Webber improved to third, ahead of Hamilton, Button, Massa, Rosberg and Schumacher. Kamui Kobayashi and Sergio Perez completed the top ten. Problems for Webber, who lost it at Turn 9 and hit the barrier front on. The Aussie's car suffered nose damage and a puncture in the shunt, although there could be more as it was quite a hard hit.

Hamilton took over at the front, with a 1:23.350, and held onto the position as the session came to a close.
