McLaren team boss Martin Whitmarsh says the decision to put Lewis Hamilton on intermediate tyres in Hungary following a few spots of rain was a "team" call.
Hamilton was comfortably leading the Hungarian Grand Prix, but rain fell briefly on lap 47 and he started to lose grip. After a spin a lap later, the team decided to call him to the pits to put on inters.
However, Hamilton had barely left the pits before the rain stopped, forcing him into another stop a few laps later to change back to options.
The 26-year-old eventually had to settle for fourth place, behind his team-mate Jenson Button, Sebastian Vettel and Fernando Alonso who didn't put on inters during the brief shower.
Team principal Whitmarsh says it was a team move to bring the Brit in.
"It was a team decision for Lewis to go on to inters - it was raining, his tyres were shot and there was rain on the radar," he told BBC Sport.
"Half the cars came in and did the same thing. Clearly with hindsight you'd make a different call, but he stayed calm, picked up another couple of places and important points.
"He's a guy who wants to win and as his reaction shows, he's dealt with the situation so well."
