FIA prepared for another U-turn

The FIA insists they are prepared to reverse the decision to clamp down on blown diffusers after this weekend's race, providing all the teams agree.

Motor sport's governing body announced several weeks ago that all off-throttle blown diffusers would be banned as of the British Grand Prix, but the decision caused unrest among teams.

The rule makers then had a change of heart on Friday and agreed to hand Renault-powered teams a concession - which allowed them to run at 50 per cent throttle under breaking - for reliability reasons. However, that was not the end of the matter as the FIA made a dramatic U-turn overnight and announced on Saturday morning that the concession had been withdrawn.

With fans, drivers and team officials all left scratching their heads over the changes, the FIA called an emergency meeting with team technical directors at Silverstone after qualifying on Saturday afternoon to clear up the matter.

The end result was that new rules remain in place for the British Grand Prix, but they are willing to go back to the old regulations after the event at Silverstone.

"During Saturday morning's Extraordinary Technical Working Group meeting, the members discussed the viability of returning to the pre-Silverstone set-ups and strategies," the statement said.

"If the teams are in unanimous agreement, the FIA is prepared to adopt this arrangement until the end of the current season."
