Lowe: DRS has aided teams

McLaren technical director Paddy Lowe believes that the introduction of the Drag Reduction System has allowed teams to avoid radical overhauls of their cars.

In recent years the lack of overtaking in F1 has been a topic of great discussion and in an attempt to increase passing opportunities, the FIA in 2011 introduced DRS.

The system opens an adjustable flat on the rear wing of the car, reducing downforce and giving a trailing car a greater chance of overtaking the car in front of them.

The desired results were achieved with more overtaking occurring, but many claim that the passing is too artificial.

However, Lowe has backed the system because it means that the teams have not had to make expensive aerodynamic changes to try and increase passing.

"What's great about DRS is at least we can move on from this debate of trying to change the aerodynamic characteristics of cars to try to improve overtaking," Lowe told BBC Sport.

"We've found something much more authoritative, much cheaper, easier and more effective, and adjustable from race to race."
