Heikki Kovalainen says his P17 grid slot at Silverstone was the result of Team Lotus seizing the opportunity when it was presented.
Racing for one of F1's three new teams, breaking out of Q1 is a major achievement for any of the Team Lotus, Virgin of Hispania drivers.
And while none of his five main rivals have managed to do it, on Saturday at Silverstone Kovalainen succeeded in breaking into Q2 for the third time this season.
The Finn will start Sunday's 52-lap British GP from 17th place on the grid.
"It us better than we were expecting," Kovalainen told the BBC.
"We've had a straightforward weekend apart from the weather and the car is functioning well.
"When conditions were favouring us, we took the opportunity - that's what we've got to do every time."
