Hamilton looking forward to 'downtime'

Lewis Hamilton admits he is looking forward to some "downtime" after he finished a frustrating 2011 season in disappointing fashion.

The McLaren driver was forced to retire with a gearbox problem during Sunday's season finale at Interlagos. He was first told about the issue on lap 38 and 10 laps later, while battling with Felipe Massa for P5, he lost drive and was forced to park the car on the side.

The DNF means he finishes the 2011 campaign fifth in the Drivers' Championship. He also has to settle for the No.2 tag in the McLaren garage as team-mate Jenson Button finished P2 in the standings.

Although he is disappointed that he was unable to score some points in Brazil, Hamilton is happy that the season is over and he can spend some time with loved ones.

"I think it's been an interesting year," Hamilton told BBC Sport.

"Today, I gave it my all. I enjoyed the race and it's a little bit unfortunate that weren't able to get extra points.

"I was challenging Felipe at the end and was hoping I could get him but the gearbox didn't last.

"It's been a long, long year and I'm looking forward to a little bit of downtime with family and friends.

"There is a lot to improve on but I feel it's all positive even though we didn't have a great result today."
